To date, wild fires in California have claimed more than 800,000 acres. Additionally, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) there are more than 1,000 residential fires per day. While there is no way to completely eliminate the risk of a fire, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the chance of a fire damaging your property. Below is a brief list of some common fire safety tips:
- Always have a working fire extinguisher at your home or business
- Check the batteries in your smoke alarm frequently
- Create a fire escape plan for you and your family
- Avoid BBQing near your property and never leave your grill unattended
- Clear your rain gutter and property of leaves or other flammable material
- Never leave lit candles unattended
- Do not overload your electrical system
- Have your electrical system inspected periodically by a qualified professional
- Avoid smoking indoors and always ensure cigarettes are completely put out prior to throwing them in the trash
- Clear your dryer lint traps frequently to prevent build up
